The black burnt bowls are made of a red oak felled due to disease in the Botanical Garden of the University of Warsaw in early 2021. The 200-year-old tree was in danger of collapsing during gale force winds. The decayed trunk was cut down. Instead of being burnt, it was given to the artist to work with. In "Shells vessels" the oak returns as a memory of something grand that has passed away, and its remains remind us of its glory days. These objects remind us of the inevitable end, even of the things that are beautiful and monumental. "Shells vessels" are made of wet red oak in the hollow wood technique - a technique used for making wooden dugouts. Working with wet wood from a diseased tree was challenging. The cracked and decayed stumps were delicate and brittle, with a thickness of 1-2 mm on the walls and 2-3 cm on the bottom. Black staining and grain texture was achieved through burning and brushing, followed by a quick oiling of the hot wood. Burning the wood caused cracks at the cross and tangential sections, which required the ability to predict them. Each "Shell" has an individual shape and is made from a different part of the tree. The size of each stump was random which was an additional technical and aesthetic challenge.
